Sometimes You Just Need a Quiet Place to Think

The phone alarm goes off. My groggy eyes look over at the alarm clock. It’s 4:00 A.M. Well I suppose I better get up. This guy needs to get to work on time. I roll out of bed into the brisk night air and quickly put on my uniform (to help retain just a little heat). Two days worth of food gets packed into a cooler, then thrown into the back of my car. After some steaming hot coffee gets poured into my travel mug, I am ready for my several hour drive to work. I admit it, I loathed getting up this early at first. This quote from Blaise Pascal sums up my initial experience exactly. “All of humanities problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” It also might stem just from being excessively tired. I don’t know. One of the two is right. Maybe both depending on the day. As the weeks and months passed driving to work that early, I realized something. My ability to think creatively and clearly was increasing. I did not always drive in the silence but forcing myself to be in a position where I had to be alone with my personal demons was making me a better version of myself. Before my brain would hound me on the, “what if’s” and the, “I can’t believe you did that’s” of my daily life. Now this is just a great opportunity to learn and move onto the next thing. I am actually to the point now where I look forward to the long drive! What better an opportunity to hash out ideas? Knowing very well that sometimes my lesson that I learned from my own experience is obscure, I imagine you ask the question, “So… you want me to get up early early and drive to work?”. To which I respond, “that might not be a bad idea, however not quite the point.” When was the last time that you forced yourself to sit alone with yourself in the quiet? It’s a strangely worded sentence, but there is really no better way of putting it. After I was able to calm the storm in my head it was amazing how clear, creative and concise my ideas were! You don’t have to hop in a car and start driving in order to achieve the same results that I did. Maybe your quiet place is the gym, a long walk, or wrapped in a blanket on the couch. In a world where there is always background noise, videos, and activity going on it is tougher now than it ever was to find a quiet place to think. (Here’s another great example of a quiet place- I can tell you from my own experience that there a few things in this life more beneficial than accepting and learning to be with yourself.
